Saddam and the Children

The more that information comes out of Iraq regarding the way Saddam Hussein treats his own people, the more my heart breaks.  But last night after hearing President Bush's remarks during his State of the Union address I am truly heartsick.

I think it would be fairly safe to say that Americans knew that the Iraqi people were not being treated well.  We knew that unspeakable tortures were going on.  But to torture innocent children in front of their parents to force the parents to comply?  What sort of heartless monster would do such a thing?  I shudder to think of what these children have to endure at the hands of their torturers.

For a few moments after hearing President Bush's statement I was filled with indignation, and yes, a healthy measure of moral superiority.  I have a feeling that I was far from alone at that point.  How could we, as a nation who so loves our children, allow this sort of atrocity to continue?

It was at this point that God burst my bubble, as He so often does.  Our nation - the United States - is no better in the treatment of our little ones than Saddam Hussein.  In fact, I would say that in some ways we are far more barbaric.  We simply veil our practices in nice, sterile legal terms, turn a blind eye and go on to lead lives steeped in hypocrisy.

For almost a generation now we have sanctioned and encourage the wholesale slaughter of our children in ways that would make the strongest person shrink back in horror and disgust.  Helpless babies are dismembered.  They are torn apart in what should be the safest place in the world for them - their mother's womb.  As if there weren't enough babies being murdered during the beginning of pregnancies, Dr. Martin Haskell came up with a procedure so hideous I cannot imagine how it was ever accepted by true medical professionals.  I am speaking of partial-birth abortion.  If you are not familiar with the specifics of the procedure, I suggest you find out as I will not detail it here.  It is one of the most cruel and vile practices I have ever heard of in my life and as far as I can find out there is never a medical reason for this procedure to be performed.  The mother goes through labor, so she is not being spared that physical trial.  There have been a number of cases where the mother goes into premature labor while being prepped for the procedure and she goes on to deliver a live, healthy baby.  But rather than allow the baby to draw breath and be placed with a loving family, it is murdered in a most hideous way.  Why?  Well, would it surprise you to know that this same Dr. Haskell runs a number of abortion clinics that also take orders for fetal tissue?  Apparently partial-birth abortion allows for an increase in profits as the baby's body parts are not damaged.  But make no mistake; his clinics aren't the only ones who profit by selling body parts.  In fact it is quite common.  May God have mercy on us.

The women of this nation, and I dare say the world, have been deceived.  In the name of health care and individual rights they have been told that they have every right to terminate their pregnancies.  Many women, especially vulnerable young girls, are never even told that they are pregnant and therefore have no choice in the matter.  They are simply told that the doctor can perform a procedure that will allow them to start menstruating again.  It is only after this “procedure” is performed that they are asked if they want to know whether or not they were pregnant.  By then it is too late and these women are scarred for life.  If abortion is such a wonderful choice, why are people not told the absolute truth about it and why is there an overwhelming push for more and more blood?  It seems that those involved with the slaughterhouses that are called women's clinics cannot be satisfied.  And I fear it may be too late for this country to recover from the curse we have brought upon ourselves.

No matter how we might try to sanitize what we allow, sanction, and encourage, the simple fact is that we are torturing and killing our babies because they are inconvenient and because their broken, lifeless bodies can line our pockets with money.  They are being sacrificed on the altar of our society's ideals.

If w are looking to our perceived moral high ground as a basis to go to war with anyone anywhere we had better watch our step.  Let us take this opportunity to examine ourselves and our reprehensible practices so that we can remove the log from our own eye before trying to remove the speck from our neighbor's eye.
